The Toronto Blue Jays have failed to extend Vladimir Guerro Jr., but a deal could be on the horizon. Guerrero’s latest comments suggest he is still open to signing a long-term extension.
Following the Blue Jays’ Saturday win over the Baltimore Orioles, Guerrero spoke to Apple TV’s Tricia Whitaker and shared his thoughts on staying in Toronto.
“When we have people like that (in the lineup), you want to stay,” the four-time All-Star admitted. “I love this city. I love these fans and I love this team too.”
USA Today’s Bob Nightengale recently revealed that Guerrero’s wish to stay in Toronto is getting closer to becoming a reality.
“The Toronto Blue Jays continue to inch closer to signing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to a contract extension, likely a 14- or 15-year deal worth about $500 million, which will be crucial for Blue Jays CEO Mark Shapiro’s popularity in Toronto,” wrote Nightengale.

Guerrero is looking for at least $500 million in free agency right now. However, he has noted that he could change that number to be even higher if he has an MVP-type season. The Blue Jays would be wise to get a deal done before he starts a bidding war in free agency.
The Blue Jays have recently not had much success landing star free agents. They whiffed on both Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto. Not to mention, they missed out on Corbin Burnes this offseason as well. Shapiro has remained confident even after they failed to get an extension done before spring training.
“I think we’re going to sign him. I think we’re going to extend him,” Shapiro told reporters on March 20, according to The Athletic.
