The proposed La Liga match between Villarreal and FC Barcelona, being held in the United States, has caused a lot of controversy in the football community. Many are not a fan of this proposed fixture being played abroad, especially since the match is an official league game.
The fixture between Villarreal and Barcelona was scheduled for December 20 or 21 at the Estadio de la Ceramica, meaning Villarreal fans who hold season tickets will not be able to watch their team play Barcelona at their home ground.
Neutral fans did not understand the proposal of the game being played in Miami, Florida, as the home fans would need to travel to the U.S. to watch a ‘home’ game. The proposed stadium for the game in the U.S. would be the Hard Rock Stadium.
After receiving approval from the Spanish Football Federation, Villarreal’s president, Fernando Roig, spoke about the game against Barcelona in Miami, which will be a great opportunity to grow the league.
The match is yet to be confirmed to take place in Miami, but if it does, Roig offers two great perks for Villarreal fans who wish to attend the game in the United States, including free tickets.
Fernando Roig’s Attractive Proposal to Villarreal fans
In a press conference, Roig revealed that if the match against Barcelona in the U.S. is approved, the club will not only offer free tickets to its fans, but also offer free travel to Miami.
Roig understands that most fans may not be happy with the decision, so he also gave another alternative. If Villarreal fans who hold season tickets decide not to go to Miami, the club will give fans 20% back from the price paid on their current season ticket.
RAC1 reports that Barcelona could earn nearly $7 million from the game against Villarreal in the U.S., but Villarreal would receive higher compensation.
