Vikings’ Justin Jefferson makes Olympic flag football announcement for U.S. Dream Team

Justin Jefferson wants the gold medal.

The Minnesota Vikings superstar wide receiver has been a global flag football ambassador for the NFL, and now he hopes to get his chance to play in the Olympics.

The NFL owners voted unanimously Tuesday to allow their players to compete in the 2028 Olympic Games in the newly added flag football competition.

“To be honest, I’m at a loss for words,” Jefferson said, via ESPN’s Brooke Pryor. “To think about the chance of playing in the Olympics and getting a gold medal, it’s a dream.”

Olympic flag football will be played in a five-on-five format, placing a premium on pass catchers. Jefferson is among the best in the world.

It’s hard to guarantee anything about what things will look like three years from now, but no one would be shocking if former LSU teammates Jefferson and Ja’Marr Chase are both on the U.S. Olympic team. They could be catching passes from Patrick Mahomes, or Josh Allen, or Joe Burrow, or any other number of rising star QBs.

Jefferson clearly wants the chance to play.

The only controversy may come from full-time flag football players’ desire to represent the United States instead of the NFL stars who would be moonlighting in the competition.

The U.S. will enter the Olympics as the heavy gold medal favorite regardless.

And if Jefferson has his way, he’ll be there.

He’s probably even harder to cover without pads on. Good luck to the rest of the world with that.
