Vancouver Whitecaps stun MLS with signing of German legend from Bayern Munich

The Vancouver Whitecaps signed who?

That was the only appropriate reaction to the headlines that broke on Wednesday.

The answer: Thomas Muller.

Yes, that Thomas Muller, the German legend from Bayern Munich.

He’s coming to Vancouver and MLS.

Muller scored 250 goals and dished out 276 assists at Bayern, one of the top clubs in Europe. He won 13 Bundesliga titles in Germany, along with two Champions League crowns.

The forward has earned 131 caps with the German national team, tallying 45 goals and 41 assists. They won the 2014 World Cup, and Muller won the Golden Boot at the 2010 World Cup.

He’s retired from international duty, but he’s still a world-class finisher.

And now, Muller is joining the Whitecaps.

“I’m looking forward to coming to Vancouver to help this team win a championship,” Müller said in a release. “I’ve heard great things about the city, but first and foremost I’m coming to win.”

This is by far the biggest signing in Whitecaps history, and it comes at a key time.

Vancouver is second in the Western Conference standings, and they’re coming off an appearance in the CONCACAF Champions League final.

Currently, the Whitecaps are led in scoring by U.S. striker Brian White, who has 11 goals.

Muller can join White and add to the firepower.

“Thomas is a world-class player – the ultimate Raumdeuter; interpreter of space – known for his elite chance creation, unmatched spatial awareness, and relentless off-the-ball movement,” said Axel Schuster, Whitecaps FC CEO & sporting director, in a release.
