Utah reportedly connected to controversial goalie signing

The Utah Mammoth are a team looking to take another step forward this year after making massive improvements last season narrowly missing playoff contention.

The offense has been significantly upgraded with the addition of JJ Peterka. The defense as well has solid depth with the addition of Stanley Cup champion Nate Schmidt.

One question mark for the club is the goaltending. The current Vejmalka-Vanecek tandem is alright, but does not exactly strike fear in the opposition’s hearts. An upgrade could be pursued and according to reports a controversial move is being considered by Utah.

Who is Utah targeting in net?

Via insider Darren Dreger, the Utah Mammoth have reportedly taken a look at former Flyers netminder Carter Hart. The 27 year old goalie was recently reinstated by the league following an internal investigation.

It makes sense that Utah would be monitoring Carter Hart. While there are off ice questions, his on-ice play in net has teams interested in him for a reason. Hart was once one of the most touted young goalies in the NHL. Having been removed from the game for over a year there will be rust, but that is a risk some teams lacking in goal will be willing to take.

There are other risks to take into account with a potential Hart signing, especially for Utah. The new franchise has cultivated an aura of positive vibes over a year through, bringing in Hart would provide some baggage. This will come down to whether Utah keeps the faith and bets on their current tandem or feels the desperate need to do whatever it takes to seek an upgrade at the most important position in hockey.
