USWNT SheBelieves Cup roster 2025: Cat Macario back in squad for U.S. women vs. Japan, Australia, Colombia

The U.S. women’s national soccer team begins its 2025 schedule with the annual SheBelieves Cup on home soil.

Emma Hayes enjoyed a wildly successful start to her USWNT head coach tenure, leading the squad to a gold medal at the Summer Olympics before navigating a near-perfect slate of friendlies in the aftermath.

The USWNT has returned to FIFA’s No. 1 ranking as a result, following their slip from the summit after their 2023 Women’s World Cup struggles.

The Sporting News brings you an overview of the USWNT roster for the 2025 SheBelieves Cup, which is notably missing a number of regulars but sees the return of one key player.

USWNT roster, squad for 2025 SheBelieves Cup

On Tuesday, February 11, Emma Hayes named a 23-player roster for the U.S. women’s national team in the 2025 SheBelieves Cup.

Of note — two USWNT regulars are now officially going by their new married names. Lyndsey Horan will now be known as Lindsey Heaps after marrying Tyler Heaps back in December, while Lynn Williams is now going by Lynn Biyendolo after her recent marriage to Marley Biyendolo.

Along that same vein, while Sophia Smith is not on this SheBelieves Cup, she also just recent married NFL player Michael Wilson, and is likely to begin going by Sophia Wilson when she returns to the roster.

2025 SheBelieves Cup match schedule

The world No. 1-ranked United States will, as always, host the SheBelieves Cup in 2025, with No. 6 Japan, No. 15 Australia, and No. 21 Colombia as the participants.

After a one-year alteration to the SheBelieves Cup format in 2024, this year’s edition will go back to the regular round-robin style.

Last year’s edition was shortened to a four-team mini bracket to lighten the schedule slightly in a crowded women’s football season. With the Women’s World Cup and Olympics now both well in the rear view mirror, the competition can return to handing every participant a guaranteed three matches.

Multiple stars missing for USWNT

There are a number of regular USWNT stars missing from the 2025 SheBelieves Cup roster, most of whom are recovering from minor injuries and not risked by Emma Hayes with the NWSL season not yet started.

Naomi Girma (calf), Rose Lavelle (ankle), Sophia Wilson (fitness), and Trinity Rodman (fitness/back) are amongst these individuals still gaining fitness.

For both men’s and women’s soccer — but especially for women — there is a greater injury risk to players in the beginning stages of their preseason, and thus any minor fitness issues were taken into account by the USWNT coaching staff.

Additionally, Mallory Swanson does not appear on the roster. She has not yet joined up with the Chicago Red Stars preseason squad, citing “personal reasons.” No further details were given, but the club has stated they “fully support” her absence, and she is also thusly not with the USWNT squad.

Catarina Macario returns for USWNT

One player who does return to the fold is Catarina Macario who is back in the USWNT squad for the first time since last summer.

Macario is seeking just her third USWNT cap since her serious knee injury in 2022, shortly after winning MVP at that year’s SheBelieves Cup.

It appeared that Macario was on track to a return to her regular attacking role for the national team last year, but was set back by knee irritation that kept her off the USWNT squad for the Summer Olympics.
