USA vs. Canada live score, updates, highlights from 4 Nations Face-Off hockey championship

USA vs. Canada was so nice, they had to do it twice — this time, for all the marbles.

A rematch of last Saturday’s thrilling rivalry game between the Americans and the Canadians is on deck for Thursday night in Boston, as USA and Canada meet in the championship of the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off.

The red, white and blue secured its spot in the final game of the NHL international tournament with a 3-1 win over its rival last weekend. Jake Guentzel scored twice, Dylan Larkin had the game-winning goal and an assist, and Connor Hellebuyck turned aside 25 shots in net to propel the USA to its first victory over Canada in best-on-best international hockey since the group stage of the 2010 Olympics.

Canada earned its place in the championship by knocking off Finland 5-3 on Monday afternoon. The Canadians cruised out to a 4-0 lead after two periods, but the Finns scored three times in the final six minutes of regulation to put the pressure on the maple leaf. Ultimately, Canada survived the comeback attempt, punching its ticket to a rematch with the United States.

Monday’s game against Sweden was meaningless for the USA, as the shorthanded Americans fell to the Swedes 2-1 in Boston. However, the injury concerns for Mike Sullivan’s team are real. Matthew Tkachuk and Auston Matthews both sat out of the game against Sweden with injuries to rest up for Thursday. Charlie McAvoy also was absent on Monday, and he already has been ruled out for the final. Brady Tkachuk was injured in the first period of the Sweden contest and did not return.

The first edition of USA-Canada did not disappoint. With the stakes raised even higher for the championship, expect another night of riveting action to occur, this time at TD Garden.

The Sporting News is providing updates and highlights from the USA vs. Canada Championship game at the 4 Nations Face-Off.

Pregame

7:51 p.m.: As expected, it’s Connor Hellebuyck vs. Jordan Binnington in the creases tonight. Hellebuyck’s sensational 2024-25 NHL season has continued this tournament, as he’s allowed just two goals on 47 shots in his two starts. He did not play against Sweden on Monday. Binnington has allowed eight goals on 74 shots in his three games, and a few weak goals have led to criticism of his play.

7:42 p.m.: Chris Kreider is taking line rushes with Vincent Trocheck and Brock Nelson, while Kyle Connor is off on his own. It appears he’ll be the odd man out at forward tonight for the USA.

7:35 p.m.: A big change to the lineup for Canada — Josh Morrissey is a last-minute scratch due to an illness. He will be replaced by Thomas Harley. The Jets defenseman has played on the second pairing with Colton Parayko all tournament.

7:25 p.m.: The chants are starting up again in Boston! It’s still about an hour away from puck drop, but the energy is palpable.

7:15 p.m.: The big changes for this game compared to Saturday come on the blue line. Canada gets back Cale Makar, who was sick for the first contest during the round robin, while the USA is without Charlie McAvoy, a massive loss for the Americans. His physical presence on the blue line will be heavily missed.

6:50 p.m.: It’s still an hour and a half before puck drop, and the USA chants have already started inside TD Garden. A quieter “Canada” chant began before quickly being drowned out by boos. It’s going to be loud in Boston tonight.

6:45 p.m.: Both teams have arrived at TD Garden ahead of tonight’s highly anticipated matchup.

6:25 p.m.: For Canada, the healthy scratch at forward already has been announced. Seth Jarvis draws back into the lineup while Travis Konecny will sit. The Flyers forward was a healthy scratch in last Saturday’s game against the USA, so Konecny won’t get to play in either rivalry game.

6:10 p.m.: On the USA side, coach Mike Sullivan said that everyone is available for tonight’s game, with the exception of defenseman Charlie McAvoy, who was previously ruled out. However, the lines and scratches will not be determined until right before the game.
