Pittsburgh made an early offseason move by acquiring DK Metcalf after his long career with the Seattle Seahawks. The only problem was that the Steelers didn’t have a quarterback to build around. That’s why they signed legendary Aaron Rodgers to a one-year deal.
Rodgers gave the Steelers a verbal agreement, although it took him some time to make the deal official. This is expected to be Rodgers’ final season, and the Steelers know it’s a prime opportunity to make a Super Bowl run. However, former Steelers player James Harrison believes Rodgers could be cut halfway through the season.
“If [the Steelers] start losing and it’s looking like they ain’t gonna make above .500, I think it gets real ugly, real fast,” Harrison said. “To the point where they may just be like, ‘You know what, let’s let this dude go midseason. For Aaron, let’s just get him outta here and put one of these other quarterbacks in.’ Mike [Tomlin] ain’t going nowhere.”
Ryan Clark doesn’t think the Steelers made the right move by signing a one-year rental in Rodgers.
“Aaron Rodgers signing with the Steelers is the worse case scenario. I think he’ll play good enough, & the team will be just good enough to miss out on a franchise guy next year! One of the greatest players of the era, & one of its greatest head coaches… just years too late,” Clark said.
Amid the skepticism, USA Today’s Jacob Camenker believes that if Rodgers doesn’t help the Steelers win, it could mark the end of the line for head coach Mike Tomlin.

“The Steelers haven’t won a postseason game since the 2016 NFL playoffs and Aaron Rodgers is coming to town. If Tomlin and the 41-year-old veteran can’t mount a playoff run and get a win, the Steelers may decide that it’s finally time to change things up despite Tomlin’s successful run replacing Bill Cowher,” Camenker wrote.
The Steelers haven’t had a losing season since 2003, but the long playoff drought without a win has become frustrating. Ultimately, it’s up to Rodgers—who could take Tomlin with him out of Pittsburgh by the end of the season.
