Unlikely hero comes through for walkoff hit in 11th for Cardinals

It came from an unlikely source, but the St. Louis Cardinals got just enough to finish off a come-from-behind 6-5 win on Saturday over the Cincinnati Reds. The win was the fifth straight for St. Louis, as they have surged to 42-35 on the season.

After trailing 5-2 heading into the eighth inning, they scored two in the eighth, and Nolan Arenado hit his 351st career home run to send the game to extra innings. After loading the bases in the 10th with no one out and failing to score, St. Louis needed some 11th-inning magic.

That’s where Yohel Pozo came in. With Jordan Walker at second and a leadoff hit-by-pitch to Nolan Arenado, both Nolan Gorman and Lars Nootbaar popped out. Pozo blooped a single into right field, and the throw from Will Benson was offline, scoring Walker and sending the fans home happy.

It was a scorcher in St. Louis, as the heat index rose as high as 110 degrees on the field.

This is Pozo’s first season with the Cardinals. He made his MLB debut with the Texas Rangers in 2021 but had not appeared on a big-league roster since then. He had just 77 at-bats that season.

After battling in the minor leagues, he was added to the active roster on April 7. He is now sharing time with Pedro Pagés, as Iván Herrera is out with an injury.

The game-winning hit was the first walk-off of his MLB career. Pozo is now 3-for-8 in his last at-bats, including a hit on the 19th against the White Sox in his lone plate appearance.

Pozo has just two home runs on the season but has three doubles and has scored seven runs so far.

St. Louis is set to finish the series against the Reds on Sunday before welcoming the first-place Chicago Cubs to town for a four-game series starting Monday.
