Manchester United are desperately looking for a goalkeeper and a midfielder in this summer transfer window as Ruben Amorim is keen to take them to greater heights after last season’s debacle.
The Red Devils are in dire need of a goalkeeper after Andre Onana’s struggles last season and Altay Bayindir’s poor start in the Premier League defeat against Arsenal.
Therefore, United were in the market for Aston Villa veteran Emi Martinez, who had an emotional farewell at Villa Park and was set to leave the club.
United were strongly linked with Martinez as they felt he could be the best bet to replace Onana in goal as he comes with loads of experience for Villa and also with Argentina with whom he has won the World Cup in 2024.
While his Villa chapter looked all but over last season, the 32-year-old has returned to Aston Villa’s starting lineup in their second Premier League 2025/26 game against Brentford away from home.
The Argentine missed the opening fixture against Newcastle United because he was suspended after seeing a red card in Villa’s final fixture last season against Manchester United.

Will Emi Martinez continue at Aston Villa?
With little more than a week left in the summer transfer window, it seems like Martinez will continue being Villa’s first-choice goalkeeper.
The Argentine would want to play as much as possible considering next year’s World Cup and hence a move elsewhere so late in the window looks uncertain.
On the other hand, Manchester United are also close to signing Senne Lemmens from Royal Antwerp. The Belgian goalkeeper is expected to claim United’s starting spot over Bayindir and Onana.
So, there’s a major possibility that Martinez will continue to be in goal for the Villans for at least another season with new signing Marco Bizot dropping down as his deputy.
