Whenever the U.S. Open rolls into Oakmont Country Club, scores tend to be higher than in most other majors.
The Henry Fownes-, Tom Fazio- and Gil Hanse-crafted course presents a series of challenges to golf’s grandest talents. With rolling hills, fast greens, bunkers pockmarking the course’s landscape and mutinous Poa annua grass, there’s plenty of reason to believe this year’s tourney will be one of the more difficult competitions in recent memory.
Perhaps that’s a good thing. Majors have been defined largely by low scores as of late — we’re one year removed from Xander Schauffele and Bryson DeChambeau posting 21-under-par and 20-under-par, respectively, at the PGA Championship in Valhalla.

Tournaments are often hard to predict. But it seems unlikely that this year’s U.S. Open will produce a similar outcome.
Regardless, the first round of action should give viewers insight into just how the pasture will play during the weekend. Spectators are more than grateful for such an opportunity.
