Two PSG stars’ journeys at 2025 Club World Cup come to an end

Paris Saint-Germain secured a 2-0 win against Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals of the Club World Cup on July 5.

With this win, PSG booked their spot in the competition’s semifinals, where they will face Real Madrid on July 9 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Despite their victory that led to the qualification, there is some bad news for the Parisians, who will not be able to have two of their key players in the squad for the remainder of the Club World Cup.

During their quarterfinal clash against Bayern, PSG’s Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernandez received straight red cards.

Pacho had to leave the pitch following his booking in the 83rd minute for a late tackle on Leon Goretzka. Hernandez, meanwhile, was sent off in the last added time for his temperamental challenge against Raphael Guerreiro.

While usually a red card leads to a one-match suspension, both Pacho and Hernandez have been given a two-game suspension by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, who appear to have considered the PSG duo’s respective offences on the pitch to be severe enough for the additional ban.

What’s next for Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup?

The two-match ban for Pacho and Hernandez means that the duo will not have a chance to feature in the Club World Cup final, even if PSG are able to bag a win against Real Madrid in the semis.

Pacho and Hernandez’s absence could cause problems for PSG head coach Luis Enrique, who will have to sort out his backline for the upcoming game and potentially the competition’s final.

PSG and Real Madrid have a pretty close record against each other, with the Spanish club claiming five victories while the French side managed four wins in 12 matches, with the remaining three games ending in a draw.
