Trey Hendrickson’s contract situation with the Cincinnati Bengals has been one of the main storylines of the offseason.
The superstar edge rusher has been seeking a long-term extension from the Bengals since last offseason but hasn’t received a new deal yet, which led to him skipping mandatory minicamp and expressing frustration with Cincinnati’s lack of communication throughout the offseason.
Though Hendrickson and the Bengals are still in a standoff, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Sunday that both sides have resumed contract talks, which is a fantastic sign.
Along with resuming talks on a new deal, it looks like Hendrickson has received a contract update. Schefter expects the Bengals All-Pro defender to land an extension worth around what Maxx Crosby got from the Las Vegas Raiders and what Myles Garrett got from the Cleveland Browns.
“[Trey] Hendrickson, Watt, I think they’ll be in the Crosby, Garrett range,” Schefter said on Unsportsmanlike on Monday. “Somewhere in there.”
Crosby signed a three-year, $106 million extension with the Raiders this offseason with $91 million guaranteed, which is $35 million per year. Garrett signed a four-year deal worth $160 million with the Browns shortly after, with $123 million guaranteed, which is $40 million per year.
Hendrickson deserves an extension worth around what Crosby and Garrett got, as the 30-year-old has posted two straight 17.5 sack seasons for the Bengals and is one of the best pass rushers in the entire sport. We’ll see if Cincinnati and Hendrickson can finally get something done.
