Trade pitch sends top Flames dman to Canadian foe

The Calgary Flames’ Rasmus Andersson’s future has been a talking point throughout NHL circles this offseason. The 28 year defenseman is entering the final season of his current $4.5 million deal with the club and is now eligible for a contract extension. However, those talks have fizzled and it appears unlikely the top dman signs a new contract this summer, opening up the door to the possibility his future in Calgary may be up in the air.

A trade pitch from “NHL Trade Rumors” suggests the possibility of a deal that sends Andersson to the Ottawa Senators. In return, the Calgary Flames would receive Shane Pinto.

For Ottawa, this mock trade would address their need of another top 4 defenseman to add to the fold to complement Jake Sanderson and Thomas Chabot. For Calgary, they add more needed firepower to the offensive front.

Anderson recorded 11 goals and 20 assists for 31 points in 80 games with the Flames last season. Over the course of his 9 year career all with Calgary, he has amassed 47 goals and 184 assists in 536 regular season games patrolling the blueline. In the playoffs, he has registered 7 goals and 7 assists for 14 points in 27 games.

Pinto recorded 21 goals and 16 assists for 37 points in 70 games with the Sens last season. Over the duration of his 5 year career in Ottawa, he has totaled 51 goals and 56 assists for 107 points in 210 regular season games. In the playoffs, he has tallied a goal and assist for 2 points in 6 games.

We’ll see what happens on the Rasmus Andersson front. Perhaps he and the Flames may still reach an extension. But the longer time passes the more uncertain his future in Calgary becomes.
