Tottenham weighs summer swoop for Barcelona star

Tottenham Hotspur have reached a point where finding a new centre-back is no longer just about adding depth but about solving a problem that has been haunting them for over a season now.

The team conceded 65 goals in 38 Premier League games last term which placed them among the worst defensive performers in the Premier League and that alone made it clear where the work needed to be done.

Much of that damage came during spells when Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven were out injured leaving the defence exposed and short of leadership during critical moments in the season.

Radu Dragusin picked up an ACL injury in February and is still in recovery while Kevin Danso has only just arrived and needs time before being trusted in a regular starting role.

With Thomas Frank now leading the project Tottenham are searching for a defender who brings experience, consistency and the ability to lead.

Tottenham are moving for Barcelona star

According to Fichajes, the club have opened talks and is exploring a possible summer move for Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo whose future is now under the spotlight despite signing a new contract earlier this year.

According to the report, Araujo have not ruled out a change in environment particularly as he has yet to regain his best form and a move to the Premier League could offer the fresh start he needs.

However, the transfer will be challenging as Barcelona are unwilling to part with the defender easily even though they remain open to negotiations if the right offer arrives.
