Tottenham set to make first summer signing under Thomas Frank after ‘agreement reached’

Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on their first signing of the summer under new boss Thomas Frank — and it’s a familiar face.

French forward Mathys Tel, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Spurs, is now set to make his stay permanent.

According to reports in Germany (via BILD), an agreement with Bayern Munich is all but done.

The 20-year-old had a mixed spell in North London after arriving in January. While he scored only three goals in 20 games, the club clearly sees potential in him.

New head coach Thomas Frank has already given the green light for the move, signaling he wants Tel in his plans for next season.

Spurs fans might not have been overly impressed with Tel’s numbers, but the club’s interest in making the deal permanent shows they’re playing the long game. Sometimes you don’t need fireworks — just a spark.

Frank says “oui” to Tel as Spurs and Bayern settle the score

Bayern and Spurs had initially agreed on a loan deal with a hefty €45 million buy option. But Tottenham weren’t too keen on that price tag.

So, the clubs went back to the negotiating table. The final deal is now expected to cost Spurs €35 million, plus the €10 million they already paid for the loan—a bargain by today’s market standards.

While Bayern will still make a profit on the player they signed from Rennes for €20 million, Spurs are hoping Tel’s best years are ahead. Thomas Frank, known for building young talent, sees Tel as someone who can thrive in his system.

Max Eberl, Bayern’s sporting director, recently confirmed the clubs were in talks but didn’t share details. “Conversations are ongoing,” he said. That was as close as he got to showing his hand.

Tel is currently on duty with France at the Under-21 Euros. By the time he returns, he may have a new long-term home — and a new manager waiting with open arms.
