Tottenham Hotspur vs. AZ Alkmaar final score: UEFA Europa League result, stats, highlights as Odobert sends Spurs through

Tottenham Hotspur reached the quarterfinals of the UEFA Europa League after a 3-1 win over AZ Alkmaar in the second leg of their Round of 16 tie.

A poor performance in the first leg in the Netherlands had left Spurs needing a good response in front of their home fans, and they duly provided it despite one or two anxious moments.

Wilson Odobert scored a goal in each half, either side of a good James Maddison finish, meaning Peer Koopmeiners’ powerful strike counted for little.

Odobert turned home into the top corner from a Dominic Solanke cut-back, which came after Spurs’ high press forced AZ into an error on the edge of their own box.

The Premier League side then took the aggregate lead for the first time through Maddison, who finished superbly after combining with Son Heung-min.

Of course, it would not be a typical Spurs performance without a calamitous moment at the back. Some dithering over a loose ball allowed Koopmeiners to steal into the box and blast a shot past Guglielmo Vicario, drawing AZ level in the tie.

But Postecoglou’s team roused themselves to score a fantastic third, Odobert prodding home at the far post after a flowing move from back to front carved open their opponents.

Spurs will now face Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarterfinals, the Bundesliga side having thrashed Ajax 6-2 on aggregate.
