Toronto mock trade parts ways with bottom 6 forward

As internal competition for roster spots continue for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the midst of training camp, the makeup of the lineup begins to become more clear.

Through this battle for spots in the rotation, some players will be left on the outside looking in. One of those players is forward David Kampf, whose role as a bottom 6 penalty killer is in jeopardy with the most recent arrivals.

Toronto may want to consider moving the forward as a result. A potential Kampf trade would accomplish a few objectives. For one, it would free up $2.4 million that could give the Leafs cap room to pull off a more major maneuver in the future if needed. It would also clear space in what is currently an overcrowded Maple Leafs offensive rotation.

David Kampf trade pitch

Michael DeRosa of Heavy Sports has presented a mock trade that would address this David Kampf dilemma. In this move, the Leafs ship Kampf to Anaheim in a cap dump trade for Toronto.

Toronto acquires: 2026 6th rounder

Anaheim acquires: David Kampf

For Anaheim, they acquire a solid bottom 6 depth forward who can play in all situations and provide needed versatility to a Ducks lineup that can use as the team looks to make a playoff push this year. With the Ducks massive cap room, bringing on Kampf’s contract would not be an issue for them. They have the most cap space in the league at the moment at over $20 million compared to Toronto’s situation having less than $2 million to work with.

For Toronto, they move on from a player who has lost his way in their loaded forward group. And they would increase their cap availability to over $4 million, which could give them added options moving forward.
