Toronto linked to 6’4” 240 pound defensive enforcer

If there’s one constant looking back on past failed Toronto Maple Leafs playoff runs that ended prematurely in unspectacular fashion, it’s the lack of grit in the lineup.

Talent and skill have never been a question when its come to the 2020’s Maple Leafs. The squad has had more than enough firepower up front to get the job done. However, come playoff time scoring alone won’t win series. Every team needs those sandpaper intangibles.

Geoff Hannah on “NHLTradeRumor” has linked Toronto to a tough Montreal Canadiens defenseman that would help address this need: Arber Xhekaj.

What would Xhekaj provide the Leafs?

Arber Xhekaj is one of the most feared players in the NHL, he has that dog in him. Any smart opposing forward knows to keep their head up at all times when Xhekaj patrols the ice. Adding Xhekaj to the fold in Toronto would effectively kill 2 birds with one stone as it would provide the Leafs with some more needed defensive depth and finally give them that toughness they’ve been lacking down the stretch.

In terms of what this move would cost, the Canadiens would not make it cheap. For their arch divisional rivals to acquire the services of their prized goon, Toronto would have to pay up and make it worth the Habs while. But, the Leafs championship window is open right now and it won’t be ajar forever. Now is the time for the Leafs to make aggressive moves and seize the moment. As for the Canadiens, they have enough assets in the arsenal where they would at least consider moving Xhekaj for the right return.

We’ll see how the Leafs attempt to address this need in the future as they look to load up and achieve greater playoff success in 2026.
