Toronto likely to let go of recently acquired forward

The Toronto Maple Leafs are a team with plenty of depth throughout their lineup entering this 25-26 season. With so much talent to go around, competition for roster spots and ice time will be at a premium as training camp and preseason hockey is soon to get underway.

This reality will leave some players on the outside looking in or diminishing roles they are not used to. Such is the landscape of a team that is expected to compete and be a top performer on a consistent basis.

One of those players whose future with the Maple Leafs appears unclear is Scott Laughton. Rob Couch of “NHLTradeRumors” believes the Leafs will likely part with the forward’s services after this season.

Why is Scott Laughton’s future with the Leafs uncertain?

Scott Laughton was recently acquired by the Toronto squad from the Philadelphia Flyers during this past 2025 NHL trade deadline. The case for many deadline acquisitions is a rental agreement, in which said player walks in the offseason for a new team.

This was not the case for Laughton as the 31 year old forward still has a year remaining on his current contract. But this will likely be the dilemma for him next summer when he is due a new deal the Leafs will probably be unable to pay him given their salary cap situation.

Until then, the Leafs will hope Laughton can perform in the short term and provide them the depth scoring they sought after when they brought Scott into the fold. He struggled in his brief Toronto tenure last season with only 4 points in 20 regular season games and 2 points in 13 playoff contests.
