The Detroit Red Wings are a team that not long ago had no clear future in net. Now, they suddenly have an abundance of talent at the position on the current squad and in the system.
Detroit acquired John Gibson this offseason to be their starter in net while their goaltending prospects in the system marinate. And there are 2 very good options on the table there.
The first is Sebastian Cossa. The Wings drafted him in 2021 and he has been developing in the AHL farm system the last few years. He made his Red Wings debut making 1 start last season.
The second is Trey Augustine. The Wings drafted him in 2023 and he has spent that time since then playing in college for Michigan State University. He has also won back to back gold medals in the World Junior championship tournament with Team USA. The rise of Trey Augustine as a top goalie prospect in the NHL has made fellow top prospect Sebastian Cossa expendable via Cam Robinson.
The Wings have some decisions to make on this front. Of course they could simply keep both and have a potential dynamite 1A 1B goalie tandem of the future to work with. Or they could decide to flip one of them to a team in need of goalie talent, likely Cossa, for other more immediate assets to help them win now and return to the playoffs for the first time since 2016. We’ll see which route Detroit GM Steve Yzerman decides to take here.
