Timberwolves target veteran guards as final roster spot as season nears

The Minnesota Timberwolves have been on the cusp of the NBA Finals over the past few seasons; however, they have yet to achieve this goal.

With their eyes on an NBA Finals berth, the team  are looking to make more significant roster changes.

So far this offseason, they re-signed Julius Randle and Naz Reid to contract extensions, solidifying their front court. Now with the 2025-26 season approaching, the team could be looking to fill its final roster spot with a proven veteran guard.

According to the Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski, Minnesota is looking to fill its final roster spot to strengthen its backcourt.

“Their recent signings of Johnny Juzang to a training camp deal and Enrique Freeman to a two-way contract essentially leave one open spot on the roster that the team plans to use on guard to bolster the depth behind Mike Conley and Rob Dillingham,” he wrote.

He added that the team has explored several options, including Bones Hyland,Malcolm Brodgon, Cam Payne, Payen, and Landry Shamet.

The Timberwolves’ backcourt features veteran Mike Conley and Rob Dillingham, who often play next to Anthony Edwards. Adding another quality ball handler could provide valuable insurance for—the upcoming season.

Bones Hyland, who spent part of  last season with the Iowa Wolves, signed a two-way contract with Minnesota annd appeareds in four games. He remains in the front runner for the final spot.

Cam Payne and Lamdry Shamet both last played for the Knicks last season, proving to be solid rotational players for a team that went to the Conference Finals last season.

Meanwhile, Brodgon, the 2023  Sixth Man of the Year, last played with the Washington Wizards, would add proven playmaking and another veteran leader to any team he joins.

With Mike Conley nearing retirement, the Timberwolves appeared determined to continue their ascent and climb towards an NBA Finals berth.
