The Minnesota Timberwolves will be looking for new ways to improve their team entering 2025. Last season, they reached the Western Conference Finals, but this season they are a borderline playoff team.
On paper they’ve got a similar team, but the blockbuster deal where Minnesota sent Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks for Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo hasn’t worked out in their favor. This trade has left more questions than answers.
There’s been moments where both players have struggled to mesh with the rest of the team. They’ve also put together impressive performances, but not consistently.
In addition to trying to gain team chemistry, the rapid decline of Mike Conley has left the team in an even more vulnerable position.
With the desperate need for a point guard, the Wolves appear to be interested in adding some more players. Sunday evening, Marc Stein reported that Minnesota is amongst one of the teams that are interested in signing guard Lonnie Walker IV.
“Lonnie Walker IV is drawing NBA interest and can be bought out of his contract with Lithuania’s BC Žalgiris in the EuroLeague by any NBA team until Feb. 18. Potential suitors are said to include the 76ers, Timberwolves, Heat, Nuggets and Celtics. Walker, of course, went to training camp with Boston,” Stein wrote.
Walker IV was selected 18th overall in the 2018 NBA Draft by the San Antonio Spurs. He has always been an explosive guard. He just hasn’t been able to find a home in the NBA and a team willing to put pieces around him.
Since his subliminal message on X to all NBA teams, he has been playing very well for Žalgiris Kaunas. He’s averaging 14 points, but more importantly has improved his efficiency shooting 43 percent from the field and 38 percent from three-point range.
If the Wolves do decide to sign Walker, he would bring some versatility to the backcourt and provide some quality minutes. Both Conley. and rookie Rob Dillingham have been dealing with injuries on and off all season. Bringing in a hungry Walker could help energize the team.
The recent decision to waive PJ Dozier, which freed up some cap space, makes the possibility of the Wolves signing Walker IV even more enticing. This would be a low risk move that could have a high reward if it works out.
