The Minnesota Timberwolves are a good team, but they are one star guard away from having a top starting five in the league. What’s crazy about this is that they could have had that guard back in 2017.
According to Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley, if the NBA were to do a re-draft of the 2017 NBA Draft, the T-Wolves should have selected future NBA Champion and NBA All-Defensive guard Derrick White with the seventh pick.
“White is, for lack of a better word, a winner. It’s hard to dissect his game without leaning into clichés or coach speak,” Buckley wrote. “He works like a human adhesive, filling the gap for whatever his team needs in that particular game.”
This season, the Timberwolves could have had a guard averaging 16.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists, a block and 0.9 steals per game supporting their superstar, Anthony Edwards, in the backcourt.
This would be an upgrade of 8.5 points, 1.7 assists, and 0.8 blocks per game, while only a downgrade of 0.2 assists and 0.3 steals per game from their current starting point guard, Mike Conley. Not to mention, White is seven years younger than Conley, so he has a lot of basketball left in him.
This draft definitely has a lot of teams kicking themselves after seeing the players who became stars not be on their teams. The T-Wolves are definitely one of them, and now have to look to the offseason to fix their problems.
