Tigers shut down $15 million pitcher for season

The Detroit Tigers have continued to stay patient with injured starting pitcher Alex Cobb while he’s tried to get healthy again in his first year with the team.

After signing a one-year, $15 million deal with Detroit this past offseason, Cobb suffered injuries to both of his hips during Spring Training.

Fast forward to now, Cobb is yet to make his Tigers debut. After recent news, it looks like it won’t be happening this season.

Cobb, 37, has done everything possible to try and get back to a healthy form for the Tigers to rely on him as a rotational pitcher. On Sept. 2, while making another rehab start, the $15 million pitcher decided that he was ready to stop pushing the injury.

“Cobb told reporters on Saturday that he plans to undergo resurfacing surgery on his right hip… He’s battled pain, received injections in both hips, and gone on two lengthy minor-league rehab assignments in an effort to contribute to the Tigers down the stretch,” Evan Woodbery of MLive.com wrote.

Alex Cobb’s stint with the Detroit Tigers appears over before it even began. Lingering injuries have followed him since his 2023 All-Star season with the San Francisco Giants, and he’s made only three starts in the majors since then.

After hearing the news, Alex Cobb’s baseball career could be on the verge of ending. In 14 years in the MLB, he’s played for the Tampa Bay Rays, Baltimore Orioles, Los Angeles Angels, San Francisco Giants, and the Cleveland Guardians.

If this is the end for the 37-year-old, his career statistics include a 79-76 record, 3.84 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, while striking out 1,108 batters in 1,327.2 innings.
