Tigers prospect meets with cancer patient, then hits 3 home runs and steals home — in the same game

Josue Briceño pulled off something that has never been done in Major League Baseball.

Minor league records don’t go as far back, so there’s a chance a professional has already pulled off what Briceño did on Thursday for the High-A West Michigan Whitecaps. But probably not.

The 20-year old top-100 prospect in the Detroit Tigers organization put together one of the craziest stat combinations ever.

Briceño hit three home runs and stole home in the same game.

West Michigan announcer Dan Hasty announced confirmed on social media that it had never been done before in MLB, and in MILB dating to 2005 when those statistics are available.

Making the night even more special was the time Briceno spent with 13-year old Theo Price before the game. A Tigers fan, Theo has chondrosarcoma, a type of bone cancer.

Briceño wore the yellow bracelet given to him by Theo during the game.

“After I hit the first homer, I started thinking about him,” Briceño told reporters postgame.

On the night, Briceño added a double to go 4-for-4. His steal of home came on a successful double steal.

As far as his future MLB role goes, Briceño can both catch and play first base.

This season, Briceño is hitting .268 with 11 home runs and 33 RBI. Thanks to a .383 OBP and lots of extra-base hits, Briceño has a .993 OPS.

He will likely never have another game like he did Thursday, though, no matter how prolific and lengthy his baseball career is.
