The Detroit Tigers bolstered their bullpen with some moves at the trade deadline. They acquired Codi Heuer from the Texas Rangers, Rafael Montero from the Atlanta Braves, Kyle Finnegan from the Washington Nationals, and Paul Sewald from the Cleveland Guardians.
Detroit knew they were taking a chance on Sewald, as he has been on the IL for a good portion of the season while dealing with right shoulder inflammation. However, he has recently started his rehab and is steadily progressing.
According to Motor City Bengals, the reliever recently completed his second bullpen. He is expected to throw a few more bullpen sessions before moving on and facing live hitters.
Sewald is eligible to come off the IL on Sept. 10. He is expected to return to the big-league club at some point next month.
Injuries have plagued Paul Sewald over the years
Paul Swewald has been effective when he hasn’t been bitten by the injury bug. Over the past two seasons, the righty has made four trips to the IL.
In 2024, Sewald hit the IL with a left oblique strain and followed that up with left neck discomfort later in the season. This year, he was placed on the IL early in the season due to a right shoulder strain and then again in June with the same injury.
Despite the time on the IL, Sewald has been successful when he has been healthy. He fills up the strike zone and generates above-average whiffs on his sweeper. He could be a huge addition down the stretch if he continues to excel during his rehab.
