The Detroit Tigers announced several roster moves before their series opener vs. the Miami Marlins at loanDepot Park, including right-hander Sawyer Gipson-Long’s placement on the 15-day injured list with neck stiffness.
Additionally, pitcher Jose Urquidy was activated off the 60-day IL and joined the 28-man active roster. In a corresponding move, right-hander Beau Brieske was recalled from Triple-A Toledo and placed on the major league 60-day IL with a right forearm strain.
Gipson Long’s injury comes after a disappointing outing on Thursday night vs. the New York Yankees in which he allowed seven earned runs over 2.1 innings. Detroit (84-63) ended up losing 9-3 at Yankee Stadium.

Detroit’s flurry of roster moves
Gipson-Long was recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Sept. 2 but appeared in just two games with Detroit before being placed on the IL. The 27-year-old has dealt with countless injuries over the past few years—including another IL stint for neck stiffness earlier this season—and he even underwent Tommy John surgery in April 2024, followed by hip surgery two months later.
Urquidy also underwent Tommy John surgery in June 2024 and hasn’t pitched in a major league game since the end of the 2023 season for the Houston Astros. He signed as a free agent with the Tigers in March.
During his rehab assignment in August, Urquidy held a 3.20 ERA across stints with both Single-A Lakeland and Triple-A Toledo. Typically a starter, Urquidy will ease his way back to the majors by coming out of the bullpen.
But he could be useful come playoff time thanks to plenty of October experience, including a World Series ring in 2022 with the Astros. However, Urquidy likely won’t be more than a multi-inning reliever for the remainder of this year, which doesn’t fix the Tigers main problem—starting pitching.
Ace Tarik Skubal looks like he’ll win his second consecutive American League Cy Young award, but Detroit’s pitchers drastically drop off after him. Some of the Tigers’ starters are simply out for the season due to injury, like Reese Olson, while others are available but continue to underperform—chiefly Jack Flaherty, who’s followed up his stellar 2024 campaign with a 4.69 ERA over 29 starts this year.
Someone on Detroit’s pitching staff must step up if the Tigers are hoping for a deep postseason run.
