Tigers’ Gleyber Torres faced with pivotal free agency decision

Detroit Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres will once again become a free agent after this season. After a successful All-Star campaign in his first season with the Tigers, Torres will command another intriguing market this winter.

After spending the first seven seasons of his career with the New York Yankees, Torres signed a one-year, $15 million deal with Detroit this past offseason. In exchange, Torres has given the Tigers quality production at the second base position, hitting .253 with 16 home runs, 73 RBIs and a .752 OPS. Torres was also named to his third All-Star selection for his efforts.

Torres amongst the top free agents available

In line to hit the open market again, Yahoo! Sports’ Jake Mintz labeled Torres amongst the top 20 free agents available this upcoming offseason.

“Only two qualified hitters, Juan Soto and Trent Grisham, have lower swing rates on pitches outside the zone,” Mintz said. “That’s a strong base for any player and helps Torres overcome his brutal defensive numbers at the keystone. Given his age and track record of hitting, a club will absolutely offer him a multi-year deal.”

At just 28-years-old, Torres is still in the midst of his prime. While he may have peaked early in his career with the Yankees — smashing 38 home runs in 2019 — Torres is still a highly productive infielder with strong upside. He’s been a part of many winning teams in his career, and that trend has continued in Detroit, where he’s been one of the catalysts for the Tigers’ best season in quite some time. With the playoffs nearing, Torres could score even more points in free agency with a strong showing in October.
