The Detroit Tigers received devastating news on one of their brightest young pitchers.
The team announced that Jackson Jobe, one of the team’s top starting pitchers behind Tarik Skubal, will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair the UCL in his throwing arm. He will miss the remainder of the 2025 season and potentially some of the 2026 season. The news was reported by Tigers team reporter Daniella Bruce and reposted by the Tigers’ main X account.
The 22-year-old was listed as one of the top pitching prospects in baseball coming into the season, and while his 4.22 ERA and 1.49 WHIP were not elite numbers, he was sure to make progress and help the Tigers make a postseason push.
This is brutal for a team on the brink of contending. At 44-24, the Tigers currently have the best record in MLB. They have been struck by the injury bug recently, with other starters Reese Olsen and Casey Mize also dealing with ailments.
The Tigers will need to rely heavily on Skubal and Jack Flaherty at the top of the rotation. Skubal, the defending AL Cy Young winner, is arguably the best pitcher in baseball with his 2.16 ERA and astounding 0.82 WHIP. Flaherty was a free agent acquisition for Detroit for the second offseason in a row after they traded him to the Los Angeles Dodgers at the trade deadline last season.
It now becomes increasingly likely the Tigers will need to shop for pitching help at this year’s trade deadline.
