During the Detroit Tigers and Tampa Bay Rays game, starting pitcher Casey Mize left in the middle of his outing with an undisclosed injury or situation. At the moment, there was concern over how severe whatever took him out of the game was. But fortunately, after the game, the Tigers got some good news.
According to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press on Twitter/X, Mize left the game early, not because of an injury. Instead, after the game, A.J. Hinch revealed that Mize left early due to a cramp. His removal was precautionary and shouldn’t affect him going forward.
Good news: Casey Mize is not injured. The #Tigers removed him for precautionary reasons due to a cramp, manager A.J. Hinch said. https://t.co/AbVRTWjXO8

With most of the United States in the middle of a heat wave, it’s not the first time a player has dealt with cramping issues in similar weather. Fortunately for the Tigers, while Mize’s outing was cut short, it shouldn’t be a long-term issue.
Mize still went five strong innings, allowing one earned run and six hits with five strikeouts and no walks. He left the game at 80 pitches and was likely on his way to another quality start in his strong season so far.
In 2025, Mize has a 2.96 ERA and a 7-2 record. He’s also struck out 72 batters and has been one of the main reasons why the Tigers have been so good in 2025. He’s helped lead the Tigers’ pitching staff to a 49 and 30 record, the best in Baseball.
While the injury scare could’ve been bad for Detroit, this update from Hinch postgame is great news. When his stuff didn’t look as good in the sixth, there was real concern that something was up. But, just dealing with cramps on a hot day isn’t the worst outcome for the Tigers’ number-two ace.
After his injury scare, Mize will look to get back on the mound against the Minnesota Twins during the Tigers’ home stand to close out the month of June.
