Tigers get bad news on slugger amid injury announcement

The Detroit Tigers sit atop the AL Central and are in great shape over halfway through the MLB season. But ahead of their series against the Washington Nationals, they got some bad news on one of their sluggers.

According to Evan Woodbery of MLive Media Group, the Tigers are placing Kerry Carpenter on the 10-day injured list with a hamstring issue and recalling infielder Trey Sweeney to take his place on the active roster.

Carpenter exited the game against the Minnesota Twins on Sunday night after suffering a hamstring injury and was later sent to get an MRI. He initially suffered the hamstring issue early in the game, and aggravated it when he legged out a triple.

The Tigers slugger has been a huge part of the firepower offensively this season, as he has 16 home runs and 32 RBIs in 78 games played. He’s batting .257 with a .779 OPS. A year ago, his .932 OPS in 87 games was incredible, but he struggled to stay healthy.

Carpenter is 27 years old, and he’s in the middle of another strong season. But this injury could keep him out through the All-Star break. The Tigers are in great shape and don’t have to rush him back.

This move comes after Carpenter had a strong night before being pulled, going 2/3 with a home run and a triple. He’s been a major reason for the Tigers’ success, and losing him for any amount of time will sting.

What this injury will do is further emphasize the Tigers’ need to add at the MLB trade deadline, as their depth is being tested. While Carpenter is on the road to recovery with his right hamstring strain, it’s not expected to be a major issue going forward.
