10-year Major League veteran and 2021 World Series champion Luke Jackson has been designated for assignment, Detroit News’ Chris McCosky reported. Right-hander Cody Heuer was recalled from Triple-A Toledo in a corresponding move.

The 33-year-old right hander began this season with Texas, where he had a 4.11 ERA over 39 relief appearances and converted nine of 11 save opportunities. Detroit signed Jackson to a one-year contract two days after the Rangers—who are still responsible for most of his salary—released him before the trade deadline.
He appeared in just three games for the Tigers, allowing four runs across 4.2 innings for a 7.71 ERA. However, all his runs were given up in his first outing with the team, and he was on a 4.0-inning scoreless streak before his designation.
Heuer, who will wear #57, was also acquired from the Rangers before the deadline for cash considerations, and he will be available as Detroit begins its three-game series vs. the Los Angeles Angels tonight. He hasn’t allowed a run in two appearances with Triple-A Toledo.
The Tigers (66-50) are having a rough few weeks after sitting a season-high 25 games over .500 on July 8 (59-34). They are 17-16 (.515) since then—which included a six-game losing streak—but are still 6.0 games ahead of the Cleveland Guardians for the division lead.
Jackson was originally drafted by Texas in the 2010 draft and made his Major League debut in 2015. He spent most of his career with the Atlanta Braves, with whom he won a World Series title in 2021. That year proved to be his best, as Jackson sported a 1.98 ERA over 71 relief outings. He tossed 3.2 scoreless frames over three games in the World Series against the Houston Astros.
But Jackson has played for four different teams since 2023, and his future is now uncertain after Detroit’s move.
