Tigers could trade for Alex Bregman if Red Sox extension talks fail

For the Detroit Tigers, no trade deadline pickup would be more perfect than Alex Bregman. He’s a third baseman, the position they need the most, and he could also be a long-term solution if all goes well.

The only issue is whether they’ll have a chance to trade for him or not. But, fortunately, according to Jim Bowden in The Athletic, if the Boston Red Sox can’t work out an extension for Bregman, he could be traded at the trade deadline.

“The Red Sox would like to extend Bregman before the trade deadline,” Bowden writes, “But it won’t be easy with Scott Boras as his agent. And, I’m hearing, in my conversations throughout the league, if he’s not extended, they could end up trading him to Seattle, Detroit, or Milwaukee.”

Of the three teams that Bowden mentions as potential destinations for Bregman, the Tigers are easily the best team. While the Milwaukee Brewers and the Seattle Mariners are good, few teams can compare to the farm system and record of the Tigers this season.

If there were a team of the three Bowden mentioned that would have the best offer for Bregman, it’d likely be Detroit.

They have interesting pitching that could be moved, while also having some of the top position players in their farm system, which could be used to land Bregman.

The Red Sox need to add a starter, and the Tigers could use someone like Jackson Jobe or Sawyer Gispon-Long to get a deal done. More would likely need to go to Boston for Bregman, but the overall point is that Detroit has the means to land him.

Not only do the Tigers have the assets to bring him to Detroit, they also have a reason to do so. Sitting atop the American League, the Tigers are poised to be the number one seed in the AL this season.

Adding a player like Bregman would be ideal for the Tigers. Before suffering a quadriceps injury this season, he had a .299 batting average and a .938 OPS through 51 games.

Bregman is likely the top option on the market this trade deadline, and Detroit would easily be among the teams who’d benefit the most from adding him to their roster.

While it’d cost a lot, and there would be a lot of uncertainty past the 2025 season, the Tigers landing Bregman would be a massive boost to the team’s World Series odds. With this report, the path to landing Bregman became just a little more feasible.
