The Detroit Tigers are already one of the best teams in Major League Baseball this year, and they could get even better next season.
Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman has an opt-out in his contract after this season. He signed a three-year, $120 million deal with the Red Sox this past offseason, and if he opts out, the Tigers could come into play to land the three-time All-Star.
The Tigers third base situation is arguably one of the team’s weakest positions. Andy Ibanez, Colt Keith, and Zach McKinstry have all split time at the position this season, adding Bregman to that mix would make Detroit a powerhouse offensively — as if they aren’t already.
Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller made the case for the two-time World Series champion to sign with the Tigers next offseason.
“If he even remotely maintains what has been easily his most impressive OPS since nearly winning AL MVP in 2019, it doesn’t take a leap of faith to assume he will re-enter free agency,” Miller wrote. “And it’s entirely possible Boston could be that high bidder, if only because the alternative is trying to explain to the fans why losing both Rafael Devers and Bregman in the span of a few months is actually a good thing.”
“And if Bregman does change teams, Detroit might be the best bet,” Miller added. “To some extent, it hinges on if/when/why the Tigers get bounced this October. However, there’s still the connection with Tigers manager AJ Hinch that made everyone believe the Tigers had a shot at signing him this past winter, and third base has been one of Detroit’s weakest spots all season.”
Bregman is enjoying another fantastic season in his first with the Red Sox, hitting .295 with 14 home runs, 45 RBI’s and a .905 OPS. Bregman was also named to his third-career All-Star game, and his first since 2019 for his efforts.
