Tigers’ blockbuster trade idea sends $79 million All-Star to Detroit

The Detroit Tigers are currently struggling, but still have the best record in the American League. Detroit is 60-42 and has a nine-game lead in the AL Central over the Cleveland Guardians.

As the trade deadline approaches, they will likely operate much differently than they did last year. In 2024, they were sellers at the deadline, but made a second-half push and secured a Wild Card spot.

Detroit needs help at third base, and there will be options available. A big bat could help them pull away from the rest of the AL.

Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report proposed the idea of Detroit landing Eugenio Suarez from the Arizona Diamondbacks.

“As the Tigers are still early in their contention cycle, there is the question of whether they should be prioritizing controllable players over rentals. But in a market like this, beggars can’t be choosers,” Rymer wrote.

The Tigers would certainly benefit from having another big bat in their lineup, especially with the kind of year Suarez is having. Suarez even made his Major League debut in 2014 with the Tigers before later being traded to the Cincinnati Reds.

The 34-year-old slugger is hitting .254/.325/.598 with 36 home runs, 86 RBI, a 3.4 WAR and a .924 OPS. He earned his second All-Star nod this season.

Suarez certainly is on pace to finish with some very strong numbers this year. The Diamondbacks haven’t decided whether to buy or sell, but with them sitting below .500, it’s very possible that they could be sellers.

In that case, it would make sense for Detroit to jump on the opportunity to acquire him. We’ll see how they approach addressing third base.
