Tigers announce unfortunate Matt Vierling roster move amid Angels series

The Detroit Tigers are in the middle of a rough stretch, as they’re 5-5 in their last ten games, and their lead over the Cleveland Guardians in the AL Central has fallen to just five games after being ahead by double-digits earlier in the year.

Amid the team’s series against the Los Angeles Angels, after splitting the first two games, the Tigers announced some unfortunate Matt Vierling news ahead of the series finale. The Tigers have placed Vierling on the injured list, as Trey Sweeney is back up in the Majors.

Detroit has already seen Vierling miss time this season with a shoulder issue, and now, the Tigers’ versatile infielder and outfielder is hitting the injured list with a left oblique strain.

In his 31 games played this season with the Tigers, he is hitting .239 with 21 hits in 88 at-bats with six runs scored, three doubles, one home run, 11 RBIs, and a .617 OPS on the year.

Just a year ago, when the Tigers made their incredible trip to the postseason, Vierling was one of the team’s best hitters. In 144 games and across 518 at-bats, he had a .257 average with a .735 OPS.

In 2025, he’s struggled to stay healthy, and when he has seen playing time, he hasn’t been at his best. Acquired from the Philadelphia Phillies for Gregory Soto ahead of the 2023 season, Vierling has been a staple of the Tigers’ lineup in recent years.

But this injury, combined with the emergence of other sluggers, has led the 28-year-old right-handed hitter to not see as much usage as he once did. The injuries didn’t help either, as he’s once again hitting the injured list and is expected to miss some time.

Sweeney takes his place on the MLB roster, as the 25-year-old shortstop looks to bounce back from a rough 85 games with the team, where he had a .578 OPS and a .208 batting average. He’s back in the lineup his first day back, hitting 8th and playing shortstop.
