Tigers announce two call ups before Mets game on Monday

The Detroit Tigers, coming off a solid August where they retook the lead in the American League from the Toronto Blue Jays, are heading into the final month of the year.

With a chance to cement a first-round bye and potentially home-field advantage throughout the postseason, the Tigers begin their September against the New York Mets in a tough matchup.

However, as Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports, the Tigers will be getting two reinforcements to aid in their quest for the number one seed. Amid September call-ups, the Tigers are making two roster moves.

Detroit Makes Two Roster Moves Ahead of Mets Series

The Tigers are calling up Chase Lee and Justyn-Henry Malloy to the active roster amid the expanded September rosters. Sawyer Gipson-Long will also be activated on Tuesday, September 2nd, though for the opener against the Mets, he won’t be on the big league roster.

Malloy is a former top-ten prospect in the Tigers’ farm system and can play a combination of infield and outfield when needed. So far in his limited big-league action this season, he has a .208 batting average with one home run and 16 RBIs across 96 at-bats.

In Triple-A this season, he has a .317 batting average with a .934 OPS thanks to 77 hits, 18 doubles, and eight home runs in 66 games played. He’ll provide solid backup potential for the Tigers down the home stretch of the season.

Lee, meanwhile, was acquired from the Texas Rangers in 2024 for Andrew Chafin. Joseph Montalvo was also acquired from the Rangers in the trade, but Lee is the player who’s getting the call back to the Majors.

He has a 4.10 ERA in 32 games this season for Detroit across 37.1 innings pitched. His 36 strikeouts and 1.10 WHIP are also solid marks, and he should help add some depth to a Tigers bullpen that loves to utilize many different relievers from series to series.

Ahead of their series against the Mets to kick off September, the Tigers made a couple of roster moves, calling up Lee for the bullpen and Malloy for depth in the outfield.
