The quadrennial FIFA World Cup comes to North America in 2026, with 48 teams from six different confederations visiting 16 different host cities across the US, Mexico and Canada. First things first, though, will be a number of different international friendly matches to prepare the teams for action.
The US Men’s National Team kicks things off this September 6 in New Jersey against Korea Republic. Three days later, they will face Japan’s national team at Lower.com Field in Columbus, Ohio, the home of the MLS’ Columbus Crew.
It’s a great opportunity for USMNT to get some experience against an international powerhouse. Japan’s team nicknamed “Samurai Blue,” has earned its distinction as one of the most powerful soccer teams in Asia.

Japan became the first team to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. They have qualified for the tournament’s final competition eight consecutive times, and they’ve reached the Round of 16 at the last two World Cups.
This will mark USMNT’s first visit to Columbus in a quarter-century.
Of course, the FIFA World Cup won’t begin until next June. But friendlies can be crucial for teams, coaches and even fans to get an early idea of how things might shake out. And any experience against a top-end team like Japan will be valuable for USMNT.
