The Oklahoma City Thunder not only have the best record in the Western Conference, but in a unique situation, also have two first-round draft picks in the upcoming NBA Draft.
Derek Parker of Sports Illustrated released a full two-round mock draft that has the Thunder selecting South Carolina forward Collin Murray-Boyles with the No. 7 pick. He also had Oklahoma City selecting Georgetown forward Thomas Sorber with the No. 17 pick.
Although they’re one of the best teams in the league, the Thunder could still use some perimeter shooting, size, and strength at the forward and center position. As a premier team in the league, they’re still 12th in rebounding.
At 6’7”, 245 pounds, Murray-Boyles provides the strength down low that the team needs. He is averaging 16.7 points, 8.1 rebounds, and on 58 percent shooting (22nd in nation). His stock has risen over the past couple of weeks with impressive performances against Arkansas, Missouri, and Texas. As a sophomore, he has put together a breakout season that could land him in the top 10 in the draft. He’d fit in very well alongside either Chet Holmgren or Isaiah Hartenstein.
To add some depth to the bench, Sorber potentially joining the Thunder at No. 17 would be a steal. It is unlikely he is on the board that long, but if he is, he would be an easy pick. This year for the Hoyas, he is averaging 14.5 points and 8.5 rebounds. He is one of the best rebounding power forwards in the nation. His stock has fallen a little over the past month or so, but he started the season putting together some great performances against Seton Hall, Syracuse, and Marquette. As a freshman, he also has a lot of potential and upside.
If Oklahoma City can add these two rebounding forwards, it could be exactly what they need to take the step if they can’t get it done in the postseason.
