With their season ended in the Wild Card, the Boston Red Sox held their end of season press conference, with manager Alex Cora, Chief of Baseball Operations Craig Breslow, and President Sam Kennedy. In it, they explained the Sox’ intentions for the offseason, and for next season.
Here are some of the biggest takeaways from that press conference:
The Red Sox want to bring back Alex Bregman
Bregman is probably going to opt out of his three-year, $120 million contract with Boston. He wants a longer contract, just to make sure he’s secure. The Sox know what he provides, and will likely give him what he wants. Plus, the Sox have the fact that Bregman loves it there, both personally and professionally going for them, so it may not be that hard to retain him.

The Sox are ok with four outfielders, still open to trade
According to Breslow, the Sox are Ok working with a logjam in the outfield. With stars in Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu, Ceddanne Rafaela, and Roman Anthony, they have to figure out where to play them.
However, they are still open to trade. With Anthony and Rafaela on great long-term deals, and Breslow making comments about how the Sox are committed to Abreu, that just leaves Duran as a possible trade piece.

Will look to improve through free agency/trade this offseason
The Sox realize they aren’t in the playoffs due to the fact they don’t hit the ball like the other teams that are still in, plus they don’t have a second ace.
They can fix that by exploring free agency, and looking for a trade. While not directly mentioned by the three on the panel, the Sox could revisit a trade for Minnesota Twins ace Joe Ryan, and possibly try to pursue a right-handed slugger to take over first base in Pete Alonso.
