The $113 million reason the Titans should trade for Tyreek Hill

The Tennessee Titans have so much cap space projected for 2026.

That gives them the opportunity to do something that sounds crazy at first glance: Trade for Tyreek Hill.

But this isn’t about Hill playing for the Titans. It’s about what comes with him.

ESPN’s Seth Walder laid this all out in a new article on Wednesday, and the basic point is this: The Titans can take on Hill’s salary (and then cut him) in order to also get draft picks from the Miami Dolphins, who would just want to get Hill’s money off their books.

Here’s how Walder lays it out:

“This would be a pure cap-space-for-draft-pick deal, as Hill would not actually play a snap for Tennessee. The Titans would take on the pro-rated remainder of Hill’s $10 million 2025 salary and acquire some draft capital. Then, Tennessee could cut Hill in the offseason before his 2026 roster bonus is due. It makes sense because the Titans have more cap space next year than they will know what to do with ($113 million, per OverTheCap.com), and Miami could use the cap relief.”

Hill’s season-ending injury earlier in this campaign has put his playing future in doubt. In a game based on speed, there’s no telling for sure how he’ll recover.

But that’s not the point at all for the Titans. They’re in a weird stage of the rebuild where they haven’t yet shelled out money on free agents to help Cam Ward. That gives them the wiggle room to make a deal like this.

If it went down, the headlines would be massive. Everyone would be surprised at the Titans trading for an injured Hill.

But it wouldn’t be about Hill. It’d be about the draft capital that comes with him in order to bail the Dolphins out of his contract.
