FC Barcelona is set to play the annual Joan Gamper Trophy against Como 1907 tomorrow at the Johan Cruyff Stadium in Barcelona. This will be the first preseason game for Barcelona ahead of the new season.
It is a tradition for FC Barcelona to play this friendly match before the start of their league campaign. Part of the tradition involves the speech from the team captain.
This year, many were unsure about which player would make the speech, as Marc-André Ter Stegen was temporarily stripped of being the team captain after the club announced the decision a few days ago.
The German keeper has received criticism for not giving his medical record to La Liga, which benefits the club. After being stripped of the captaincy of the team, for ‘disciplinary proceedings opened’ against the player.
Ter Stegen released a statement on Instagram, in which the keeper explained his surgery time frame and having no intentions to harm the club or the process of new signings.
After the statement, Barcelona announced that Ter Stegen would become the first team captain after providing his medical report involving his back surgery.
FC Barcelona statement: “Marc-André ter Stegen has signed the authorisation necessary for the Club to send La Liga the medical report relating to his surgery. The disciplinary case has been closed, and the player is captain of the first team once again with immediate effect.”
Ter Stegen to make speech at Joan Gamper Trophy Game
According to Mundo Deportivo, Ter Stegen will speak tomorrow at the Johan Cruyff Stadium to the fans as the team captain. Before recovering his team captain role, Ronald Araujo was set to become the team captain and rumored to make the speech.
Many wonder what reception the fans will give the German keeper after many Barcelona fans online expressed their dissatisfaction towards the player’s reported attitude towards the medical records.
Ter Stegen has been the team captain of FC Barcelona since the departure of Sergi Roberto last year. He made a team captain speech in last year’s Joan Gamper Trophy at the Montjuïc Stadium.
