Sunderland tie down talented Spaniard to a new deal

Sunderland have been handed a major boost ahead of the team’s return to Premier League football, as a star talent has committed his long-term future to the club.

20-year-old striker Eliezer Mayenda has officially signed a new five-year contract with The Black Cats to keep him at the Stadium of Light until 2030.

The Spaniard joined Sunderland in 2023 from Sochaux for a fee of just around £1m and has emerged into a key player for Regis Le Bris’ side.

Mayenda’s first season in England saw him make a few appearances in a red and white shirt, before he went out on loan to Hibernian.

However, the striker went on to play a valuable role in Sunderland’s promotion to the Premier League, as he scored eight goals and registered five assists in 37 league appearances last season.

The Spain U21 international then stepped up massively for Le Bris’ side in the Championship play-offs.

He netted the winner over Coventry City in the semi-final first leg, before going on to score Sunderland’s equalising goal in the side’s play-off final victory over Sheffield United in May.

What Mayenda has to say about his contract renewal

Mayenda spoke enthusiastically to Sunderland’s official channels after committing himself to the club for another five years.

“I’m very happy to sign a new contract. I think everybody knows that for me, this is my team, my club, my city – so it’s a special moment.”

“Playing at the Stadium of Light is always special. I love playing there and the supporters are amazing.”

The 20-year-old also touched on playing in English football’s top flight and his aims for the season ahead.

“I feel ready for the next challenge in the Premier League. I feel good at the moment, and I’ll give my best.”

“To score with Sunderland in the Premier League would be so special. I came here when I was 18 years old, now I’m 20. I’m going to work towards that goal.”

Sunderland’s Premier League campaign kicks off with a home match against West Ham United on August 16.
