Stephen Vogt delivers blunt, honest message on Guardians recent struggles

The Cleveland Guardians sit at 64-62 with 36 games remaining in the season. The Guardians are 10.5 games back in the AL Central and three games back in the American League wild card race.

The Guardians likely won’t catch the Detroit Tigers, who lead their division, and are looking up at the Kansas City Royals, Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees in the wild card race.

Just a couple weeks ago, Cleveland won nine out of 10 games to put themselves right back in the hunt for a wild card spot. However, now the Guardians have lost five of their last six games, and have two of their next four series against teams above them in the standings.

Guardians Need To Turn It Around

After the Guardians’ loss on Wednesday, Vogt spoke to reporters on Clevelands recent rough stretch.

“I don’t look at the scoreboard for anybody else. I just know that we need to keep winning games. We need to get back on track,” Vogt said (h/t SI.com). “This has been a tough two series for us, and games we should have won, and we didn’t, and we need to get better offensively.

“We need to continue to get better defensively, and we need to continue to pitch better. We control our own destiny; we just need to keep winning games.”

Both of the Guardians losses to the Diamondbacks came after Cleveland led or the game was tied heading into the seventh inning. However, despite losing both games, the Guardians are right in the mix for the AL wild card.

The Guardians play 10 of their 36 remaining games against teams ahead of them in the wild card race, and another six games against the division-leading Tigers.

The Guardians do control their own destiny, and they need to start winning if they want to be playing in the postseason.
