Steelers vs. Chiefs Netflix broadcast had massive, record-breaking viewership

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Kansas City Chiefs faced off on Christmas Day in Week 17, and not much went right for Mike Tomlin’s squad. Pittsburgh was completely outclassed by the defending champions and dropped their third game in a row. The Steelers are now 10-6 on the year and no longer in first place in the AFC North due to the Baltimore Ravens’ blowout victory over the Houston Texans on Wednesday.

The Steelers were completely embarrassed on national television versus the Chiefs, and the viewership for the Christmas Day games on Netflix was released to the public. According to Nielsen, Netflix’s NFL Gameday reached 65 million viewers in the United States. The average audience for Ravens versus Texans was 24.3 million, while Pittsburgh versus Kansas City was 24.1 million. Both games set records for the two most streamed NFL games in United States history.

Additionally, viewership for Baltimore versus Houston peaked at 27 million during  Beyoncé’s halftime performance, which many are dubbing the “Beyoncé Bowl.”

Though the Steelers’ loss to the Chiefs will prove to be costly, seeing record-setting viewership on Christmas Day is a fantastic achievement for the NFL. Week 17 was the first time Netflix streamed an NFL game, and things went well for the most part after a disappointing showing during the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson boxing match on Nov.15, where many fans complained about buffering and display issues.

Pittsburgh will look to put their loss to Kansas City behind them in Week 18, as the team will host the Cincinnati Bengals at Acrisure Stadium. The Steelers quest to win the AFC North is out of their control even if they defeat the Bengals next week. Tomlin’s group will need some help from the Cleveland Browns, who will square off against the Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium in Week 18.
