The Pittsburgh Steelers let Najee Harris walk to the Los Angeles Chargers in free agency this offseason, but an NFL analyst believes a reunion between Pittsburgh and the veteran running back is possible.
Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox believes the Chargers could trade Harris, and the Steelers are one of the top landing spots.
“Supporting Rodgers with a good ground game should be high on Pittsburgh’s to-do list. Bringing back Harris could help accomplish that,” Knox wrote.
Harris spent four seasons with the Steelers, tallying 1,000 rushing yards in every campaign and never missing a game. However, Harris could never reach the next level and also struggled with efficiency at times, which led to the Steelers moving on this offseason and replacing the Alabama product with Kaleb Johnson.
The Chargers could be willing to trade the 27-year-old at some point in the next few months, as Omarion Hampton figures to be the lead back, and Harris is only on a one-year deal.
Though Pittsburgh doesn’t need to bring him back, Harris could still provide value for Arthur Smith’s offense as a short-yardage back who would bring some toughness to the unit. Harris is also on an affordable deal, and a Day 3 pick should be enough to acquire him from the Chargers.
