The Pittsburgh Steelers acquired cornerback Jalen Ramsey in a recent blockbuster trade with the Miami Dolphins that also sent tight end Jonnu Smith to Pittsburgh and safety Minkah Fitzpatrick to Miami.
Ramsey is incredibly talented and has been one of the better corners in football since entering the league in 2016. However, based on a recent report from Dave Hyde of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the seven-time Pro Bowler became a locker room cancer with the Dolphins.
According to Hyde, Ramsey would constantly show up late for practice and undermine coaches during his two-year tenure in Miami, including defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and head coach Mike McDaniel.
“The Miami Dolphins won’t miss cornerback Jalen Ramsey. They won’t miss him regularly showing up for practice as the rest of the team was in the middle of stretching. They won’t miss how he constantly undermined defensive coordinator Vic Fangio two years ago and coach Mike McDaniel last season in a manner that spread like a bad odor through the larger team,” Hyde wrote.
Hyde also added that Ramsey and star wide receiver Tyreek Hill showing up late to practice ruined the culture in Miami.
“He [Ramsey] became a symbol of the Dolphins just collecting talent rather than building a team. Ramsey and Tyreek Hill were constantly late for practices or meetings in a manner that set the culture of last year’s Dolphins,” Hyde also wrote in his story.
This is a concerning report, especially if the Steelers knew about this and still traded for Ramsey. Mike Tomlin has spent nearly two decades building a gritty and team-first culture in Pittsburgh, and Ramsey seems like a player who doesn’t have the team’s best interest in mind at all times.
If Ramsey continues to show up late for practice and disrespect coaches at his next stop with the Steelers, it’s going to be a long year for Pittsburgh and the future Hall of Fame corner.
