Steelers, 49ers named possible trade partners for disgruntled former 1,000-yard WR

When it comes to the top trade candidates at the wide receiver position, Las Vegas Raiders wideout Jakobi Meyers is one of them.

Meyers, who is in a contract year and fresh off his first 1,000-yard season in 2024, became disgruntled during the offseason after he and the Raiders couldn’t get a contract extension done, which led to a trade request.

Just in case you were wondering, Meyers is still very much interested in being traded. How do we know that? Well, he said it publicly last week.

“Oh, for sure,” Meyers said of his desire for a trade, via ESPN’s Ryan McFadden. “But I’m a professional at the end of the day. I’m just trying to play good football.”

As trade rumors continue to swirl around Meyers, CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin listed four teams who are the most logical landing spots. Among them were the Pittsburgh Steelers and San Francisco 49ers.

If there’s one pass catcher set to change teams before the deadline, it’s probably Meyers, who sought a trade even before the Raiders sunk to 2-5 on the season. He may not be a massive needle mover as a possession receiver, but he still offers valuable depth and solid hands. Las Vegas may proclaim plans to win now, but Pete Carroll’s operation just isn’t clicking.

Logical landing spots: Falcons, 49ers, Panthers, Steelers

The Niners have some concerns at wide receiver thanks to injury.

Ricky Pearsall has missed four straight games, Jauan Jennings is playing hurt, and it remains to be seen when Brandon Aiyuk will be back, although the Niners noted on Friday they might open his practice window next week.

The Steelers have a more dire need thanks to the lackluster group of pass-catchers they sport behind DK Metcalf. Pittsburgh is one Metcalf injury away from truly having a disastrous situation.

Meyers, who offers inside/outside versatility, would provide a boost for both teams.

He’s got arguably the most reliable pair of hands in the NFL and almost never drops passes, and he has tallied 800 yards or more four times, including the 1,000-yard season in 2024.

And, there’s reason to believe he’s capable of more, as he accomplished those seasons with lesser quarterbacks than the ones he’d play with in San Fran and Pittsburgh.

While the 49ers have concerns, chances are they’re going to ride it out with the guys they have and hope they get healthy. San Francisco is in a transitional year and they likely won’t be keen on giving up draft capital for a wide receiver in a contract year.

The Steelers are far more likely to make a move for Meyers, as they’re clearly all in after a busy offseason that included adding Aaron Rodgers, who may only be around for one season.

Meyers would be a huge help to Pittsburgh in the short term and at 29 years old, he could prove to be a multi-year solution if he plays well enough to earn an extension.
