Starter with 3.81 ERA suddenly opts out of Phillies contract

The Philadelphia Phillies are in the midst of a tight division race. Their starting rotation has been one of the best in baseball. With no real path to the big leagues, one of their minor league starters opted out of his deal.

Mick Abel has been making starts in Aaron Nola’s absence. The Phillies also have Andrew Painter in Triple-A. Knowing that, Nabil Crismatt has opted out of his minor league contract with the Philadelphia Phillies, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

Crismatt played in five games for the Los Angeles Dodgers last year. He had a 2.57 ERA in five games. He signed a minor league contract with the Phillies in December. He pitched a total of 80 1/3 innings across 15 starts in Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Crismatt knows there is no real path for him to join the Phillies rotation. Abel is going to lose his spot when Nola returns. With Painter and Abel ahead of him, it would take at least two injuries to get him called up.

Additionally, there is no real weak link in the Phillies’ rotation. Zack Wheeler, Cristopher Sánchez, Jesús Luzardo, Ranger Suárez and Nola make up what could be the best rotation in all of baseball.

The Phillies’ starting rotation has a 3.30 ERA on the season. That’s good for the third-best in all of baseball. Crismatt had decent numbers in Triple-A, and a team dealing with injuries could view him as an option to fill a gap in the rotation.
